Community Education

The staff and volunteers of The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands are always available to provide educational presentations, training, and suicide prevention materials to members of our community. Whether it’s a local business, school, community group, faith institution, health and human services agency, book club, or other group that’s looking for more information, we believe every opportunity to work directly in the community helps strengthen our region’s ability to prevent suicides.

Our goal is to help community members understand that suicide knows no boundaries and that everyone is affected by this public health concern. Our hope is that by de-stigmatizing suicide, increasing awareness about suicide warning signs and prevention strategies, and connecting people in crisis with much-needed resources, we will decrease the number of suicides in our community.

Presentations

Our staff are available to present to your group about topics including:

  • Recognizing signs of suicide
  • What to do if someone you know is in crisis or suicidal
  • How suicide affects a community
  • Strategies to reduce suicides
  • Local mental health resources and crisis lines
  • Samaritans’ volunteering opportunities

Presentations can be tailored to your specific group in both length and content.

Trainings

Our staff are available to present to your group about topics including:

  • Elder Suicide Prevention Training: This day-long training, open to all, is designed to reduce suicide for adults 55 and older by identifying warning signs and developing strategies for early intervention and prevention.
  • QPR: Based on the CPR model, QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is a two-hour training that helps anyone in the community recognize the signs of a suicidal crisis and enable them to assist those in need by referring to an appropriate resource.

Information Tables

Samaritans staff and volunteers can a host a table at local events to share information about community resources, local and national suicide prevention initiatives, grief support and postvention services, and Samaritans volunteer opportunities.
